Huawei Outlined Support and Policies For Developers To Build HUAWEI AppGallery At Huawei 2020 Developer Day Online Summit

February 27, 2020

[Feb 24, Europe] Huawei today shared important updates on its HUAWEI AppGallery. Speaking at the Huawei Developer Day Online Summit, Wang Yanmin, President of global partnerships and eco-development at Huawei Consumer Business, outlined the progress the brand has made towards its vision of making HUAWEI AppGallery an open, innovative app distribution platform that not only is accessible, provides smart and innovative experience to consumers, but at the same time strictly protects their privacy and security. During his keynote speech, Mr Wang detailed the privacy measures in place, achievements thus far and its future.

Mr. Yanmin Wang, President of Global Partnerships and Eco-development

“Apps are the core of a smartphone experience and the app marketplaces plays a vital role in the 5G era. Research on existing app marketplaces has shown that consumers are most concerned about privacy and security. Together with global developers, Huawei can help create this safe and secure ecosystem that will benefit both global consumers and developers alike,” said Yanmin Wang, President of global partnerships and eco-development at Huawei Consumer Business.

Working Together with Developers to Build a Safe and Secure Mobile Ecosystem

Huawei has hundreds of millions of end users worldwide, laying a solid foundation for the development of such an ecosystem.  Just last year alone, Huawei shipped 240 million smartphones, making it the second largest smartphone manufacturer in the world. The HMS ecosystem has 600 million users in 170+ countries/regions around the world to date.

As a brand, Huawei rose sharply to rank 10th place Brand Finance's 2020 annual global brand value ranking. For the fourth year consecutively, Huawei has also placed within the top 50 in BrandZ rankings’ of “Top 100 world’s most valuable brands”.

Huawei has the right technological expertise and experience to implement sector-leading security infrastructure. Huawei has a nine year experience in app aggregation and development, and more than 270 experts to support developers on app development. It is expected that Huawei’s R&D spending in 2019 will exceed USD18 billon despite the current climate. Its chip, device and cloud capabilities, including a full portfolio of HMS Core resources are also fully opened to accelerate app innovation. Full life-cycle support for developers further strengthens its ability for ecosystem development.

What HUAWEI AppGallery Achieved So Far

Huawei is continuously working with the 1.3 million developers registered on HMS to increase the selection of top apps that users have come to love and depend on. Huawei has also invested in more than 3,000 engineers on ecosystem engineering.

The opening of HMS Core resources such as Maps Kit, Machine Learning Kit, Scan Kit, Account Kit, Payments Kit have contributed to connecting more than 55,000 applications to HMS Core. Increasingly, global developers are joining the HMS Ecosystem and launching their apps on HUAWEI AppGallery, delivering a better experience for global consumers together.

The AppGallery of the future

Huawei’s long-term strategy is to develop a fair and open ecosystem and it is committed to playing a key role in its promotion and prosperity. Three main pillars contribute to Huawei providing the best AppGallery experience – safeguarding privacy and security, access to quality glocal apps, and offering an innovative, high-quality app download experience.

Huawei recently teamed up with brands in the sports and fitness category to give users an elevated experience with existing apps, exclusive to Huawei AppGallery. Utilising Huawei’s HMS Core Kits and its on-device capabilities, users of a sports camera app are able to share videos recorded by sports cameras on a social platform in real time by connecting an action camera and an external microphone, all centrally controlled on a Huawei smartphone. On another fitness app, users can get accurate feedback on their workout as though they are attending personal training sessions on their own terms.

Safeguarding Privacy and Security for Developers and Users

Where Huawei puts itself ahead of its competition, is through the privacy, security and consequently trust that it can offer AppGallery users. HUAWEI AppGallery has a full-cycle security and protection system, including developer real-name verification and four-step review process for secure app operation. All user data is anonymised and stored locally, corresponding to each user’s region, in the three regional centres and 15 data centres HUAWEI Mobile Services (HMS) has established worldwide.

Globalised and Localised Approach to Apps Means Access to More Consumers

As the third largest app marketplace globally, HUAWEI AppGallery upholds a globalised and localised experience for users. Top apps across APAC, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, Latin America and many other regions are already available on the HUAWEI AppGallery so consumers always have relevant content.

Globalized app distribution allows HUAWEI AppGallery to make smarter app recommendations based on location. Developers who want to expand their business to other regions also benefit from this, having access to more users regionally and globally.

On the AppGallery, users can download apps that integrate the unique hardware and software capabilities of Huawei devices to bring about a better user experience. However, when users can’t find an app on the HUAWEI AppGallery that they’d like to download, they can add the app name into a ‘Wishlist’ and submit it, being notified when it goes on-shelf – showing users that they are an active contributing member of the AppGallery.

Creating an Innovative, Smart Future with Global Developers
Huawei recently released HMS Core 4.0 with 24 core kits. In addition to existing capability kits such as Analytics, Payment and Account Kits, new capabilities integrating Huawei’s chip, device and cloud capabilities such as Scan, Awareness and Machine Learning Kits, were launched to help apps reach more users and get a higher engagement rate, ultimately achieving efficient and successful operation.

HUAWEI HiAI, an open AI capability platform for smart devices, lets developers focus on innovation and accelerate development cycle, making apps that provide users with a better smart app experience. Through AppGallery Connect, Huawei offers full-spectrum support, from ideation, development, distribution, operation to data analytics to global developers. Huawei empowers innovations in app development and provides local developer services through the DigiX Innovation Studio platform and global DigiX Lab. Huawei also rolled out “Shining-Star” program and $1 billion incentive fund to support developers and provide them a vigorous ecosystem for innovation.

Differences on OS and platforms has been causing difficulties in content sharing across different devices. Huawei Share now brings new innovative sharing experience to connected devices. Contents could be easily shared across different devices with Share Kit built-in. Take photo printing as example, users can now select photos on smartphone and send to CEWE photo stations by Huawei Share to easily and quickly print out the photos.

With the advancement of 5G and IoT technology, more and more connected devices have entered our life. However, it’s still difficult to offer a seamless user experience across different devices from different brands running different operating systems. In the 5G era, consumers will embrace the all-scenario, multi-device and cross-platform smart life experience. Huawei sincerely invited global partners and developers to join HMS ecosystem together to bring consumers the ultimate experiences.
